(1994 - 2001) With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the IEN helped to find ways of navigating around the devastating cuts suffered by tobacco farming families, while mitigating the harm caused by tobacco products. (1999-2000) The courts serving the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County are outgrowing their current space, particularly the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court which needs immediate expansion of facilities. IEN staff worked with the Steering Committee assembled for this process to design and facilitate the public involvement meetings. The three meetings have been used to elicit community values, preferences, and ideas for siting and designing the new courts complex. (1992) IEN facilitated a series of public meetings involving stakeholder groups working to explore the purposes and uses of a controversial proposed study of the Shenandoah National Park's natural and cultural resources.
National Preservation Institute: Conflict Management & Negotiation Skills for Cultural and Natural Resource Managers
(2006 - Present) The National Preservation Institute continues to feature IEN as trainer for three-day intensive seminars on conflict resolution and prevention. Laws and regulations related to cultural and natural resources often require participatory processes that can be mired in conflict and misunderstanding. IEN staff provide frequent assistance to environmental and civic nonprofits as well as to local governments. Strategic planning facilitation has been provided for numerous nonprofits. A few examples include the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, Western Virginia Land Trust, the Virginia Conservation Network, the Virginia Water Monitoring Council, the Lewis and Clark Exploratory Center, the Blue Moon Fund, and the Archaeological Society of Virginia. (2003) In partnership with Laura Bachle of Confluence Consulting, Frank Dukes and Karen Firehock of IEN designed and offered training in mediation and group facilitation for the City of Baltimore Planning Department in Fall 2003. This initial training, offered over a period of three weeks,was part of a larger project to develop a mediation and consensus building capacity within the Department. The project was funded by the Maryland Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO), and the IEN-Confluence Consulting team was selected in response to a request for proposals. (2003-2004) Funded by a NAFCM grant to the Virginia Association for Community Conflict Resolution (VACCR) , IEN developed a training for community mediation centers and their experienced mediators to build their capacity to facilitate complex multi-party community issues. IEN conducted 2-day workshops for 8 centers in Virginia, and many of these centers implemented these skills to facilitate local community issues.
(1997-1998) IEN facilitated a series of meetings, including a stakeholder meeting, the official public hearing on a proposed draft rule, five days of meetings in Texas, a national meeting focused on public comment from state and Indian Nation representatives, and a series of meetings for the Section 403 regulations, to define \"hazard\" levels of lead content in lead-based paint, as well as in various other lead-containing substances.
(1994) IEN brought together the National Park Service, the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office, local officials, and residents to formulate a cohesive plan to revitalize St. Marys historic waterfront and to better accommodate visitors to Cumberland Island National Seashore.
(1999) IEN conducted a one-day training program, convened by the Resource Conservation & Development Council, on \"Conflict Resolution and Consensus Building\" for a variety of leaders on the Eastern Shore.
