IEN was asked to design and facilitate five strategic planning efforts in 2015-2016. Chesapeake Bay Stakeholder Assessment

(2015-Present) IEN is conducting an assessment of stakeholder experiences with Phase I and Phase II Watershed Implementation Plans (WIPs) developed by states and the District of Columbia as part of the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (Bay TMDL) accountability framework. Clinch River Valley Initiative

(2010 - Present) The Clinch River Valley Initiative (CRVI) is a pioneering effort to build local economies in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia, focusing on the Clinch River Valley—one of the most biodiverse river systems in North America. Stormwater Summit

(2013) \"A Collaborative Summit: Protecting Water Quality Through Actions on Urban-Suburban Properties\" was held February 13-14, 2013 in Williamsburg. With 179 people attending, the Summit was a unique convening of a diverse group of interests, experiences, and perspectives from government, non-profit, research, education and private sectors. TMDL Milestones

(2011) Led by the CBF/Choose Clean Water Coalition, a multi-state multi-organization partnership conducted annual assessments—interim appraisals that reviewed progress, estimated pending success or failure, and offered recommendations for mid-term adjustments, and final assessments that assessed states’ and EPA’s efforts to meet Milestone goals for the Phase I Watershed Implementation Plans (WIPs). Waynesboro Upper South River Watershed Planning

(2012) IEN facilitated in 2012 a multi-stakeholder consensus building effort involving diverse stakeholders in the Upper South River watershed. Stakeholders were charged with developing a mission and vision for the watershed, and identifying a structure for watershed stewardship. Working closely with three project partners, IEN designed a three-meeting process that would accommodate the partner budget, and allowed partners to do much of the work. Curriculum Facilitation

(2011) IEN designed and facilitated a curriculum workshop at Virginia Tech. We worked with the co-Program Directors to develop an agenda that will address participant issues, and developing a synthesis of the workshop results and follow-up actions. The first workshop will identified key learning objectives, ways to enhance student outcomes, and resources needed and available. The second workshop gave give these concepts “legs” by translating them into a functional, skeletal curriculum.

Virginia Rural Health Plan

(2012 - 2013) The 2013 Virginia Rural Health Plan was created to improve health opportunities and health outcomes in rural Virginia, and to reduce disparities between rural, urban, regional, racial, and other population groups. In 2012 and 2013, the IEN collaborated with the Virginia Rural Health Association, the Virginia Public Health Association, and the Virginia Department of Health’s Office of Minority Health and Health Equity to conduct a series of surveys, interviews, public meetings, and conferences. Founding of the Virginia Food System Council

(2007-2012) The Institute for Environmental Negotiation (IEN), working in partnership with the Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension, convened and facilitated the first meeting of the Virginia Food System Council in the spring of 2009. Virginia Water Monitoring Council Strategic Planning

(2000) During its second year, the Virginia Water Monitoring Council (VWMC) began a strategic planning process and identified near-term goals for the organization.  The VWMC developed working committees, organized and initiated an on-going inventory of water-monitoring activities in the state, and developed a survey to determine the needs of organizations involved in monitoring throughout the state.  IEN facilitated this Strategic Planning process.
